2nd July, 2013, Lampahan: On Tuesday, a powerful earthquake hit Indonesia’s Aceh province. The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.1 and it struck at around 0737 GMT. According to reports, the epicenter of the quake was at a depth of ten kilometers in the Bener Meriah district in Aceh.
The quake triggered landslide in several places and houses were destroyed. Roads were badly damaged at some places. According to reports, 7 people have died; however, the number may go up. At least thirty people were seriously injured while several other suffered minor injuries.
An eyewitness told that the earthquake felt for around fifteen seconds. People ran outside as quake rocked their houses. Troops have already started rescue efforts.
This region is a quake pron region. In 2004, a massive tremor off Aceh trigger a tsunami that killed more than 230000 people in countries around the Indian ocean.
